My epiphany about getting rid of ‘stuff’

Minimalists talk about how it is ‘better to own less than organise more’. The problem, they say, isn’t a shortage of lucite draw organisers, wicker baskets, and glass jars in our homes. The problem isn’t that we don’t own a label-maker. The problem isn’t a failure to implement a filing system for bank statements and bills going back 20 years. The problem is that we hold onto too much stuff.

We own more than we need to live a meaningful life. Sometimes we own too much to live a meaningful life. In other words, our ‘stuff’ is getting in the way of what will add value to our lives.

I definitely have too much stuff.

Although I’ve been working hard over the past year to pare down and declutter, I still find myself in a panic at the thought of having visitors over because of the amount of tidying that will be required.

I tell myself that we just need more or better storage solutions. That if everything just had its place, we would be fine. But that’s not true. I would need to triple the size of my current house to comfortably store all of my personal belongings.

It’s time to own less stuff. Much less stuff.
